John Pelphrey...
travis Ford.
---
to me the criteria if you cant get your first choice is to get someone who understands UK and our expectations and who can coach.
they both have proved that they can albeit on a lower scale. I can live with that.
Pel a little bit more than Travis because Pel recruited for Donovan at Florida.
If you cant get those two that just shows you how bad Barnhart would have been to not be able to get anyone else to come here.

You need to be able to coach too. Not just recruit. A Person named Rick Barns showed that.

just my point.
even with a POTY candidate and a senior class (who he didnt recruit) and of his recruits only one started this year...
they did what again in the overrated big 12. How far did they go in NCAA?
Big freaking deal he improved UTEP and TAMU. how far down were they... anything would have been an improvement. It was good but UK is not UTEP and TAMU.
We needed big time and we got small time.

I'm a bit skeptical since he hasn't proven himself. He's turned programs around that had no where to go but up (albeit the turnaround was rather dramatic). I wasn't a complainer of Tubby's offense when it was executed. If he can get the players to execute and be successful, then who cares. I don't know about his recruiting. I don't see him getting it done without a good staff behind him. This is EXTREMELY critical. However, he is the new coach for my favorite team. Also, I can say this about him...regarless of if he succeeded on his own merit, or on luck, I have at least not seen him fail. So with those facts in mind, I will support him and give him the benefit of the doubt until I see him fail at this job. That's just my take on this. I got reason to be skeptical, but no reason pessimistic.

Skeptical? you need to be very concerned.
The things we (*you know what I mean*) complained about are coming again with the new coach.

I don't think he has gotten a chance to show how good of a coach he actually is. He hasn't been anywhere if Im correct for any extended period of time. But of the time he has been to El Paso and A M, he's done great things. Put him at UofK for 10 years and let's see what he does

If he gets any success at Uk he will leave.
he doesnt understand what it means to be here.
If he has bad season and the fans revolt he will leave. (and believe me the way he coaches and what we have coming back. we might not get to .500) then what?

I have... In many threads. 1. Slow style of play. If you wanted a better style of play. Mitch failed. 2. He cant recruit nationally. If you wanted someone who can recruit nationally and better... Mitch failed. --- I could go on but those are 2 major setbacks right there. If he didnt have Acie Law last year (who he DIDNT recruit) we wouldnt be having this conversation about Gillespie becoming our coach. This is a big big mistake. Glad to see you're still talking about things you know NOTHING about. Billy G plays according to talent. His last team at Texas El Paso led the nation in scoring. His teams are also extremely efficient. They averaged over 75ppg last year AND they were #7 nationally when it comes to overall efficiency. He had the largest single season turn arounds in the NCAA in back to back years, El Paso and A&M. As for pace, his team averaged 65 possessions per game, while Florida averaged 66.8. Not much different. But it's not about pace as long as he can recruit. And we'll all have to wait to find out how well he recruits to UK. How much national recruiting had Pitino done at BU and Providence? But the number 1 thing that makes him night and day different from Tubby is that he's an extremely hard worker. You combine a great work ethic with the advantages of UK and you have a winner. But why don't you just follow Tubby to Minnesota, it's obvious you weren't going to be happy no matter who UK hired.

we can go on and on, but this is at best a lateral move. We needed to move forward and we didnt. While everyone else on the national scale moves forward we stay put. While the SEC moves forward (even Andy Kennedy at Mississippi) we stay put. iF you stay put people will pass you.
I can hear the speech now. Give me a chance... no we dont need chances. We needed proven leadership or at least someone who has played here and understands UK. Mitch missed both.

I know these are just numbers... but go to Big12sports.com and check out A&M stats... they are encouraging.... they shot almost 50% from the field and FG% D was really good, assists to turnovers pretty good... they averaged 75+ points a game, which is not "plow" status --- though they only average 63.4 the year before, which is "plow" status....lol interesting stat, in conference play they allowed opponents to shoot 33.8% from three..... year before in conference play they allowed a DREADFUL 40% from 3..... they certainly improved and learned how to defend the 3. www.big12sports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/statistics.html I have a friend who was on campus during the Bill Self years at Illinois.. gonna ask him what he remembers about Billy G

do you remember the last time we did this?
Eddie Sutton>?
what happened..??
I sure hope it doesnt and Billy G gets a crash course on UK and our fans... because he has no clue what he is getting into.
He will claim he does but he doesnt. Being at Tulsa and UTEP and Texas A&M and Illinois isnt UK. It is the bush league comparatively speaking.
This is a bad bad move.

The reason we didn't hire Pelphrey or Ford is simply because Gillispie is a much better candidate at this point. Plain and simple. You say the fans won't give him a chance if he has a down year, do you read your own posts? You're not even giving him chance before he's coached game 1. Silly silly lack of perspective from an "analyst".

I'll agree that I can see him bolting for the NBA if he gets us back into shape for being an annual contender. He doesn't have the same Blue Blood as some other candidates. Rick didn't, Billy didn't, that's why they aren't here. If Pel wins five championships, he would still come to UK. He just needs more conditioning. He needs to have a few more trials and errors before he's had enough lessons. I can see Billy leaving in about five years for the NBA, and at that time, we will hire Pel. I think that Billy will get us moving back in the other direction long enough for Pel to be ready. But I don't think Billy is a lifer.

"After leading both UTEP and Texas A&M to postseason appearances one year after extraordinarily weak seasons, Gillispie became the only college basketball coach to be in charge of the NCAA program with the biggest turnaround in two consecutive seasons. An excellent recruiter, Gillispie has put together four straight top-25 recruiting classes.[4] In his three seasons at A&M, the Aggies have achieved three consecutive 20-win seasons for the first time ever." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_GillispieI suggest everyone go read about him, I was impressed.

if our former coach wasnt good enough (he wasnt bad either) then this is a bad move. I am not saying he is a bad coach... He just isnt UK material. So that is a bad move... Greg if your saying that he is Tubby's equal but isnt UK material then you are essentially saying neither was Tubby so lets get some fresh meat in and give him a shot. Who was a better choice? You seem to keep avoiding that. You keep saying he can only recruit locally, well we dont really know that because he hasnt had to branch out yet. If talent is in your back yard you get it. That doesnt mean he cant its just that he hasnt had to. BIG DIFFERENCE. I stood up for Tubby but he was losing recruits from our backyard and national recruits. The guys has also only been a head coach for 5 years and is at Tubby;s point already so who is to say he cant grow and get better? No one can deny the unbelievable turnarounds he has made at UTEP and A &M in such short periods. I dont see your beef with this guy. Lets take his 3 years at A & M for example. And lets start by saying I dont give a rats A** if we win 2-1 or 100-50. Winning is what matters to me. In his 3 seasons at A & M he has a 73% winning percentage. Thats good regardless at a school like A & M but compare that to their 3 seasons of having a 34% winning percentage and its almost unbelievable. On the other hand take a basketball powerhouse like ourselves and Tubby. We have had a 70% winning percentage over the past 3 seaons. The 3 seaons before that Tubby had an 81% winning percentage here. THats not a good trend. Pace may be similar but when you take a team over with little talen defense is what can turn a program around. That wont be a case here. He isnt trying to turn our program around, but only fix the little things to get it back to elite status.
